X all set to make Likes private, says public info leading to unusual user behaviour
Musk’s social media platform X is all set to remove the Liked tab from the users’ profile. While alterations in Musk-world are not unusual, this particular change will allow users like whatsoever they want to without worrying who might see it.
X (formerly Twitter) has made public its plan to stop showing public likes on users’ pages. SinceElon Musk (Tesla CEO) has taken over this platform, he has been always in the news for altering it. Confirmation of this particular change has come fromHaofei Wang (Director of Engineering at X). In a post, responding to another media house, he stated, “Yeah we are making likes private.”Removal of likes will deny users the facility of seeing what posts other users have liked.
Wang stated that the reason for this alteration is that the users’ likes are encouraging wrong and unusual user behaviour. He added that the alteration will motivate the user like whatever they really like without worrying who might see it.”Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behavior. For example, many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be “edgy” in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image,” Wang said.
Nonetheless this is not it. Clearing up the muddle, Enrique Barragan (senior software engineer) also took to X. He said that this change will not affect the likes on one’s post. The users will still have the facility to see who likes their posts and also the number of posts, replies and other features. Barragan posted, “some clarifications on the private likes change: – you will be able to see who liked your posts – you can see the like count for all posts / replies / etc”. The main target of this change is to hide the profiles who liked somebody else’s post. The Liked tab on the profile will be disappear. Presently, the users have the alternative to hide this feature on their own, but X is planning to fully throw it in the drains.
Last month, Musk also informed that X in near future will charge new users for using the most basic features, including posting, bookmarking, liking or even reposting. He stated that the subscription will be only a “small fee”. Musk has already tested the feature in the Philippines and New Zealand but has plans to implement it globally.
Some high-profile personalities have been derided in the past after their accounts seemed to like controversial posts. A reply from Musk calling an antisemitic post “the actual truth” saw big companies pull advertising from X. Musk had to apologize.
