Elon Musk withdraws lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman very abruptly
Tesla CEO had accused OpenAI of forsaking mission of creating AI for greater good of humanity
Elon Musk has moved to withdraw his lawsuit accusing OpenAI (ChatGPT maker) and it’s Chief executive officer Sam Altman of forsaking the startup’s original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.Musk had launched the lawsuit against Altman in February, and the case had been gradually working its way through the California court system. There was absolutely no indication until Tuesday that Musk planned to withdraw the suit; just a month ago, his lawyers filed a challenge that compelled the judge hearing the case to remove himself.
Musk’s prayer for a dismissal contained no reason for the decision. A San Francisco superior court judge was scheduled to hear OpenAI and Altman’s argument for chucking the case out.The withdrawal is an abrupt end to a legal battle brewing between two of the tech world’s most influential men. Altman and Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but Musk quit the board three years later during a tussle over control of the company and its direction. As Altman’s star has risen in recent years, the two have become progressively hostile to each other.
Musk’s suit was based on his claim that OpenAI and Altman broke what he referred to as the company’s “founding agreement” to slog for the betterment of humanity. He alleged that OpenAI’sendeavor to become a largely for-profit entity that partnered with Microsoft and avoided sharing its technology with the public constituted a breach of that founding agreement.
OpenAI and Altman fervently denied any misconduct, stating that there was no such “founding agreement” and releasing messages that seemed to show Musk supported becoming a for-profit company. Altman and OpenAI also posted a blog in March that in effect accused Musk of professional jealousy, saying “we’re sad that it’s come to this with someone whom we’ve deeply admired”.The feud between Musk and OpenAIintensified earlier this week after Apple uncovered a partnership with OpenAI to augment its Siri voice assistant and OS with OpenAI’sChatGPTchatbot. After the announcement by apple, Musk posted quite a few messages on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), criticising the tie-up.
Musk’s lawsuit had drew instant cynicism from legal experts who contended that certain claims in the filing – such as that OpenAI had fashioned artificial intelligence on a level that could compete with human intelligence – did not hold up to scrutiny.
