Elon Musk says SpaceX set to launch 5 uncrewed Starships to Mars in 2 years
Earlier this month, Musk had stated that the first Starships to Mars would be launched in two years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated in a X post on Sunday that the company intends to launch around five unmanned Starship missions to Mars in the ensuing two years. Aim of these uncrewed missions is to test the spacecraft’s landing capabilities and are critical for the future crewed missions to Mars. “SpaceX plans to launch about five uncrewed Starships to Mars in two years. If those all land safely, then crewed missions are possible in four years. If we encounter challenges, then the crewed missions will be postponed another two years,” Musk wrote. For your information, the stainless-steel Starship consists of two elements: a first-stage booster termed Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship.
Earlier this year, Musk stated that the very first uncrewed starship would arrive on Mars in five years, and the first crewed would follow in seven. A Starship rocket accomplished a full test voyage around the world on its fourth attempt in June, enduring a fiery, supersonic return from space and achieving a ground-breaking landing demonstration in the Indian Ocean. Musk is relying heavily on Starship to help him achieve his aim of building a sizable, multifunctional next-generation spacecraft that can go to Mars and the moon later this decade with cargo and passengers.
NASA earlier this year deferred the Artemis 3 mission, which will employ SpaceX’s Starship to make the first crewed moon landing in fifty years, until September 2026. According to NASA, it was originally planned for late 2025. In June, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa canceled a private mission around the moon he had paid for, which was to have utilized SpaceX’s Starship, citing schedule uncertainties in the rocket’s development.
The timing for the first crewed missions to Mars depends heavily on how well these 5 uncrewed missions go. If everything works well, Musk aims to launch the first crewed missions four years from today. However, if the uncrewed missions encounter problems, the timeline could be pushed back by additional two years. Musk has a reputation for altering his timelines.
Musk’s plan to launch uncrewed Starship missions to Mars is an important step toward his vision of making humans a multiplanetary species. The success of these missions will eventually determine when people might in fact land on the red planet. Nevertheless, delays and technical challenges could impact the timeline.
